Econ Engineering Ltd is a premier manufacture of gritters and salt-spreading machinery in the UK. With over 45 years of experience, Econ has become a key player in nationwide highway maintenance solutions. Based in North Yorkshire, they specialise in producing gritters, snowploughs, and multipurpose maintenance vehicles. With a fleet of over 450 spreader vehicles, they are the top provider of gritter hire services in the UK. Innovation has always been at the heart of Econ, running cutting-edge technology in its manufacturing processes keeping them at the fore-front of their industry.
The traditional journey to gritter certification at Econ
“Familiarisation training” was designed to equip new drivers at Econ with essential skills and knowledge for operating their gritters. Previously, Econ staff would have to diligently fill in paperwork with each driver. After each training session, trainers had to answer 15 questions via paper forms to validate each driver's understanding of the training. Subsequently, these documents were given to the administrative office to be reviewed and typed into their system, and the eventual generation and dispatch of PDF the drivers’ certificates. Following receipt of their pass certificates the drivers can get to work.

The entire process is arduously manual & inefficient, resulting in delays for new drivers eager to kickstart their work, as they needed to wait for certification of their qualified skills.
Manual sourcing of data from paper forms demands copious amounts of time for boring data entry.
The challenge of deciphering handwriting only adds to the ordeal.
